Tragic maritime accident off Muttrah leaves several dead as rescue efforts continue in Oman.

A tragic maritime incident off the coast of Oman has claimed the lives of three French nationals after a tourist-carrying boat capsized in the Wilayat of Muttrah, within Muscat Governorate, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, January 27.

The vessel, carrying 25 French tourists along with a tour guide and the boat captain, overturned in the waters near Muttrah, prompting an immediate response from the Civil Defence and Ambulance Unit and the Royal Oman Police (ROP). Rescue crews rushed to the scene after an emergency report was received, but three passengers were tragically confirmed dead.

Two other individuals sustained minor injuries and were treated at the site by ambulance teams, officials said, as ongoing efforts focus on supporting survivors and offering assistance to the families of the deceased.

The cause of the accident remains unclear, and ROP, along with maritime authorities, have launched a formal investigation to determine the sequence of events that led to the boat’s capsizing.

The sad event underscores the inherent risks associated with maritime tourism and has prompted authorities to reiterate safety protocols for vessels and operators in Omani waters. Support continues for those affected as investigations proceed.
