Apple Launches Siri AI

In its most significant update to date, Apple has unveiled a new version of its digital assistant, Siri, now powered by advanced artificial intelligence. The reveal took place during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in Cupertino on Monday, marking a pivotal shift toward a more conversational and context-aware user experience.

Dubbed Siri AI, the assistant is described by Apple as "profoundly more capable," boasting an enhanced ability to understand personal context, access broad world knowledge, and possess "onscreen awareness." Unlike previous iterations that operated largely in isolation, the new Siri can navigate across apps and content to retrieve specific information for users.

Context-Aware Assistance

The upgraded assistant allows users to issue complex requests that require cross-referencing personal data. For instance, a user can ask Siri to find a restaurant recommendation mentioned in a text message from a friend, locate a hotel confirmation number buried in an old email, or pull up specific photos of family members from a recent trip.

"Siri AI is a dramatically more capable and conversational assistant designed to help users find information and get things done throughout the day," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering.

The technology will initially be available for developer testing across iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 17, and visionOS 17, with a watchOS 17 beta expected soon. Apple plans to release a public beta later this year for supported devices set to English, with plans to expand support to additional languages subsequently.

Regional Rollout Limitations

Despite the global launch event, availability will face initial geographic restrictions. The new AI features will not be available to users in the European Union due to regulatory complexities under the Digital Markets Act. Similarly, the digital assistant and other Apple Intelligence features will not be accessible in China while the company works through local regulatory requirements.

New Child Safety Features

Alongside the AI overhaul, Apple introduced a robust suite of child safety tools aimed at helping parents manage their children's digital lives. These updates, set to arrive with software releases this autumn, include:

• Enhanced Content Management: Parents can more easily control what content children see and who they communicate with.
• Time Allowances: New tools allow for setting daily time limits across entertainment, gaming, and social media apps.
• App Scheduling: Parents can dictate which apps are accessible to children at different times of the day.
• Redesigned Screen Time: The interface has been made more intuitive, requiring a child account setup for users under 13 (available for those up to 18).

Broader Software Improvements and Future Hardware

The update also brings general performance enhancements, including faster app launch times for iPhone and iPad, quicker AirDrop transfers, and new photo editing capabilities within Apple Intelligence. Safari receives browsing improvements, and the design language sees tweaks, including a new slider to personalize the "Liquid Glass" aesthetic and updated app icons.

Looking further ahead, industry rumors circulating at the conference suggest Apple is preparing to launch a foldable iPhone. Reports indicate the device will feature a wider form factor resembling an iPad or a passport when unfolded. While no official date was confirmed, speculation remains high regarding whether the device will debut at the traditional September event or later in the year.
