Saudi Embassy in Oman Coordinates Repatriation After Poet’s Fatal Fall at Jebel Samhan

The Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Oman confirmed that it is working closely with local authorities to repatriate the body of Saudi poet Saud Al-Qahtani, who tragically died while hiking in the mountains of southern Oman.

The news was shared in an official statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

According to reports, Al-Qahtani was hiking near Jebel Samhan, a mountainous area close to Salalah, on Monday when he slipped and fell from a cliff. Rescue and ambulance teams from Oman’s Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA), along with several citizens, responded swiftly to the incident. Despite their efforts, Al-Qahtani sustained severe injuries that led to his death, the CDAA confirmed in a statement.

The poet’s untimely passing has sent shockwaves through the literary and cultural community in Saudi Arabia and beyond. Known for his poetic contributions, Al-Qahtani’s death highlights the risks associated with exploring rugged terrains, such as Jebel Samhan, which is popular among adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts.

In the wake of the tragedy, the CDAA issued a public warning urging people to exercise extreme caution when visiting mountainous areas. The authority emphasized the importance of following safety guidelines, being properly equipped, and avoiding dangerous zones during treks and climbs.

The Saudi Embassy expressed its condolences to Al-Qahtani’s family and assured that necessary procedures are being finalized to ensure the safe return of his body to Saudi Arabia for burial. The embassy also extended gratitude to Omani authorities and citizens who participated in the rescue and recovery operation.
