Portrait of Gaza War Victim Unfurled on Barceloneta Beach to Mark Second Anniversary and Call for Protection of Children

Activists and demonstrators in Barcelona unfurled a massive 55-metre-long portrait of Hind Rajab, a young Palestinian girl killed during the Gaza war, on Barceloneta Beach on Thursday, January 29.

The striking visual tribute, displayed near the Mediterranean shoreline, was intended to mark the second anniversary of her death and draw global attention to the humanitarian challenges facing children in Gaza.

The image of Hind, who was five years old when she died in Gaza in 2024, was carried by hundreds of participants alongside a large Palestinian flag and the message “Free Gaza’s Children”. The display aimed to highlight the plight of civilians, especially children, caught up in prolonged conflict and humanitarian crisis.

Hind’s final moments, during which she was trapped in a car under fire and called for help, were widely publicised and later retold in the internationally acclaimed docudrama 'The Voice of Hind Rajab'. The film won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival and is currently nominated for an Academy Award, helping amplify her story on the world stage.

At the beach event, Hind’s mother, Wesam Hamada, addressed the gathering, urging the international community to focus on the rights and protection of children living in conflict. “The children of Gaza do not ask for pity. They ask for their right to live, to sleep without fear, to play without bombs, to grow up,” she said as the giant portrait was raised.

Jordanian-Canadian actress Saja Kilani, who portrayed a Palestinian Red Crescent medic in the film, was also present and echoed calls for global awareness and compassion, saying “The voice of Hind Rajab did not stay in the car; it travelled across borders.”
