Legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Sunday, December 14, in what authorities are describing as an "apparent homicide", according to police and multiple media reports.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call at the couple’s residence in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time. First responders discovered the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman inside the home. Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told reporters that both victims appeared to have fatal stab wounds.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division has taken the lead on the case, treating the deaths as a suspected double homicide. Police have not publicly identified a suspect or made any arrests, and detectives are continuing their investigation with search warrants and forensic analysis. Authorities have said a family member is being questioned, but official details have not been disclosed.
Reiner gained fame as both a filmmaker and actor, with a career spanning decades in Hollywood. He first achieved widespread recognition for his Emmy-winning role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the sitcom All in the Family before going on to direct iconic films including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Stand by Me and A Few Good Men.
Michele Singer Reiner was a respected photographer and producer, known in part for her work spanning commercial and entertainment projects. The couple married in 1989 and shared three children.
