Marriage has uneven expectations of visible loyalty. While wedding rings are mutual symbols of commitment, the expectation is that women will wear theirs all the time with little to no leeway for men. Pew Research Center data shows women are more likely to display relationship markers, leading to complaints about inconsistencies. The expectation surrounding women when it comes to men taking off their rings for sensible things really creates the opposite effect. So when women react it is because certain conditions that have to do with the system are inappropriately reflected; not wearing a ring for men is meaningless.
