For years there was this baffling piece of human history lying in Ethiopia and it was just a foot fossil, a really old one like 3.4 million years old. Scientists knew it was an ancient human relative but they couldn't figure out which one because this foot had a grasping toe like an ape. It was found in the same area as Lucy's species, you know Australopithecus afarensis, but it clearly walked differently and that was a huge puzzle. Now, after finding more clues, researchers have finally put the pieces together and figured out who that mysterious foot most likely belonged to based on the best evidence so far and it totally shakes up the human family tree.
