Black holes remain one of the most fascinating and mysterious things in the cosmos. They are very massive and it is hard to study them directly as even light itself cannot penetrate. To make good the challenge, scientists have devised experiments in the laboratory that simulate some of the physical conditions around black holes. These controlled simulations enable researchers to explore what may be learned about extracting energy from these extreme cosmic objects without going into space. These experiments do not create real black holes, but do create situations that have similar physical aspects which enhance scientific understanding.
