The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is spreading holiday cheer with its “12 Days of Christmas” free-ride program on the MRT-3 and LRT-1 and LRT-2, running December 14 to 25.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez says the initiative aims to ease commuting during the busy holiday season while giving commuters a festive treat.

Who Gets Free Rides Each Day?

The 12-day program highlights a different sector daily:

  • Dec. 14: Senior citizens

  • Dec. 15: Students

  • Dec. 16: OFWs and their families

  • Dec. 17: Teachers and healthcare workers

  • Dec. 18: PWDs and male passengers

  • Dec. 19: Government employees

  • Dec. 20: Female passengers

  • Dec. 21: Families

  • Dec. 22: Solo parents and LGBTQIA+ community

  • Dec. 23: Private sector employees and household helpers

  • Dec. 24: Uniformed personnel, veterans, and their families

  • Dec. 25: All commuters

Lopez emphasizes a relaxed approach for eligibility. IDs may be required for certain groups like senior citizens or uniformed personnel, but otherwise, commuters can simply enjoy the ride. For the LGBTQIA+ community, he said: “All you have to do is just admit it, and that’s acceptable to us.”

Safety and Convenience Measures

To ensure a smooth experience, the DOTr installed new lighting across all 13 MRT-3 stations and will deploy additional Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel during the holiday period.

Lopez reassured commuters that the program is meant to be easy and hassle-free, letting everyone enjoy their “Christmas gift” without unnecessary checks.
