As Oman counts down to National Day 2025, Muscat has transformed into a vibrant canvas of red, white, and green. Across the capital, streets, souqs, schools, and office spaces are embracing the patriotic spirit, marking the return of one of the country’s most cherished annual celebrations.

Along major roads, flags wave from lamp posts, cars are wrapped in patriotic ribbons and decals, and government buildings glow with illuminated displays. From sleek corporate towers to the historic alleys of Muttrah Souq, National Day enthusiasm is everywhere.

At Muttrah Souq, shoppers have already begun crowding the market’s narrow walkways in search of scarves, caps, and flags. Amerat businessman Khalid al Amri, browsing with a list in hand, said, “My children have asked for scarves. But I am also buying for my office staff – many of them expatriates who are equally excited for November 20.”

Shopkeeper Sameer al Balushi confirmed the early buzz. “By evening, the market is full. The lights, scarves and caps make the souq look alive again. Omanis are buying large flags, while expatriates prefer scarves and smaller items. Even tourists are joining in the shopping – some familiar faces return every few years for this festive time,” he said.

Across the sultanate, schools are also preparing for the big day with special assemblies, cultural shows and sports events. At Middle East Nursery and Development of Mental Skills, children of various nationalities celebrated both National Day and Sports Day with races, drills and patriotic songs.

“We’ve organised the Sports Day with patriotic fervor for 31 years. Seeing children of many nationalities celebrate Oman’s spirit together fills us with pride,” said Dr Chithra Narayan, Founder-Director of the nursery. The event was attended by yoga instructor Dr Prema Nagesh and cricket umpire Rahul Asher, who highlighted the unifying power of sports.

In Wadi Kabir, car garages are working overtime to meet decoration requests, with many vehicles featuring the image of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik alongside the national flag.

“Walking home after school yesterday, I counted more flags than ever – it feels like the whole community is ready to celebrate,” said student Sulaiman al Kindi.

Indian expatriate Anil Joseph echoed the sentiment: “It’s wonderful to be part of this country’s National Day. My children wave the Omani flag and feel included. This day is more than a holiday; it’s a moment of unity and belonging.”

As the cool November breeze settles over Muscat, the city continues to bloom with color, pride, and gratitude—uniting its residents in celebration of the nation they call home.
