Two Royal Oman Police officers tragically lost their lives when their patrol vehicle struck a stray camel in Maqshan, Dhofar Governorate. Two more officers were injured, and authorities are investigating the incident.
Why camels are crossing roads
Maqshan, known for its wide desert roads and camel herding, is no stranger to these risks. After recent rains, greenery sprouted along highways, tempting camels closer to the roadside and increasing the chance of accidents.
More cases across Oman
It’s not just Dhofar. In Al Dhahirah, particularly along the Ibri–Dhank–Hafeet route, camel-related crashes are on the rise. Some even wander into villages, damaging property and trees along the way.
Authorities stepping in
Officials say stray camels are behind a string of recent fatal and near-fatal crashes. Municipal teams are now working to catch roaming camels, while urging owners to keep better control of their herds to avoid further tragedies.
