Astronomers are still getting their fill of surprises from the outer solar system. A tiny far-away planet has been spotted with an atmosphere that is defying accepted ideas, far beyond the world of Neptune, where temperatures are frigid and sunlight is dim. The initial finding made in this study is significant because the object is so small and so cold that it should not have been able to retain a significant atmosphere for an extended period of time. However, observations indicate that something odd is going on and that the question of what is possible in the most distant areas of our cosmic neighborhood is now thrown into doubt.
