Islamic New Year Holiday Announced in Oman

Oman announced the Islamic New Year (Hijri) holiday for the country's public and private sectors on Thursday, June 19.

Public and private sectors' employees will receive a day off on Sunday, June 29, when the Muharram will begin on Friday, June 27.

The holiday will give employees a three-day long weekend, following the Eid Al Adha holiday.

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar. It commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which led to the foundation of the first Muslim community.

Unlike other celebrations, it is a quiet time for reflection, prayer, and remembrance. The first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram, is considered one of the holiest months in Islam.
