Oman Offers Free Open-Top Bus Rides and Unlimited Travel on This Date

Residents and visitors in the Omani capital are in for a unique treat this Friday as the nation celebrates World Public Transport Day with a special open-air bus experience and unlimited free travel across major urban networks.

The initiative, operated by national transport provider Mwasalat in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, marks a significant push to promote sustainable urban mobility and raise awareness about the environmental benefits of public transit.

The highlight of the day will be a complimentary sightseeing bus service running along one of Muscat's most picturesque coastal routes. Operating on Friday, 17 April 2026, between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM, the open-top bus will depart from Fish Roundabout in Muttrah and conclude at the National Museum of Oman.

Passengers aboard the service will enjoy panoramic views of the Muttrah Corniche, taking in the sea, historic harbour, and the vibrant daily life of the city below. The route offers a rare opportunity to experience Oman's capital from an elevated vantage point while learning about its maritime heritage.

Beyond the sightseeing experience, Mwasalat announced an expanded program providing unlimited free bus travel across urban transport networks in both Muscat and Salalah. This all-day offer encourages residents to leave private vehicles at home and explore the country's growing public transport infrastructure.

"The initiative aims to promote sustainable urban mobility by encouraging people to leave private vehicles at home and experience the country's public transport network," officials stated.

Transport authorities emphasized that the campaign reflects Oman's continued commitment to modernising its transport sector and promoting a culture of shared mobility aligned with long-term environmental and economic goals.

By offering free and unlimited travel for a full day, the Ministry hopes to:

  • Reduce road congestion during peak hours
  • Raise awareness of environmental benefits associated with public transit
  • Build a culture of shared mobility across the Sultanate

The event is part of broader efforts to highlight the role of public transport in building cleaner, more efficient, and more connected cities. As Oman continues to develop its infrastructure, initiatives like this serve dual purposes: demonstrating existing capabilities while encouraging behavioural shifts toward more sustainable transportation choices.

Citizens and residents are encouraged to take advantage of this special opportunity to experience Oman's public transport system firsthand while contributing to the nation's sustainability objectives.
