Nepal just made history. Sushila Karki, the country’s former chief justice, has officially become the first woman to serve as prime minister. The 73-year-old was sworn in Friday evening after President Ram Chandra Paudel confirmed her appointment.

Why the Sudden Change?

Her appointment comes after former PM KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday. His exit followed massive anti-graft protests that spiraled into deadly violence, leaving more than 50 people dead and throwing the nation into political chaos.

What’s Next for Nepal

Karki isn’t stepping into an easy job — she’s leading the country at one of its toughest moments in decades. As interim prime minister, her role is to stabilize the situation and steer Nepal through the crisis while the political dust settles.
