Oman is taking another big step towards a greener future! Starting July 1, the fifth phase of the plastic shopping bag ban will begin. This initiative by the Environment Authority (EA) aims to cut down on plastic waste and protect the beautiful nature of the Sultanate.

Which Businesses Are Affected?

Under Decision No 8/2024, several new business sectors will stop offering single-use plastic bags. If you are shopping at any of the following places from July 1, remember to bring your reusable bags:

  • Furniture stores
  • Khanjar (traditional dagger) shops
  • Gold and silver jewellery outlets
  • Car care centres
  • Vehicle dealerships

Supporting Oman Vision 2040

This phased plan is part of Oman Vision 2040, which aims to encourage eco-friendly habits and support a sustainable lifestyle.

Abeer bint Omar Al Qasimi, a specialist at the EA’s Chemicals and Waste Management Department, explained that this gradual approach has helped both businesses and shoppers adjust smoothly to the changes.

"This phase continues the implementation of the decision according to the approved timetable and aims to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste on terrestrial and marine ecosystems," she said.

Great Progress So Far

The community's response has been highly positive. To help everyone adapt, the Environment Authority has been active on the ground:

  • In the second half of 2025, officials conducted over 3,000 inspection visits and held 200 awareness campaigns.
  • In the first quarter of 2026, inspectors made 1,485 field visits, finding only 106 violations.

What Can You Use Instead of Plastic Bags?

There are plenty of stylish and eco-friendly alternatives approved by the authority. Next time you go shopping, you can use:

  • Paper and cardboard bags
  • Cloth and cotton bags
  • Non-woven fabric bags

The Environment Authority encourages all businesses and residents to support this decision. By switching to reusable bags, we can protect Oman's natural resources and keep our environment clean for future generations.
