One Crew Member Killed in Drone Boat Attack on Oil Tanker in Muscat

One crew member was killed after an oil tanker was attacked by an unmanned drone boat off the coast of Muscat, according to the Omani Maritime Security Centre.

The attacked tanker, the MKD VYOM, was flying the flag of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and was carrying approximately 59,463 metric tonnes of cargo when the explosion occurred. Authorities said the drone boat strike triggered a fire in the vessel’s main engine room.

The deceased crew member was identified as an Indian national. The tanker’s 21 crew members were safely evacuated in coordination with maritime authorities using the commercial vessel MV SAND, which sails under the flag of Panama.

The crew consisted of 16 Indian nationals, four Bangladeshi nationals, and one Ukrainian national.

Following the incident, the Royal Navy of Oman deployed a fleet vessel to monitor the damaged tanker and assess the situation at sea.

Maritime authorities issued navigational warnings to vessels passing through nearby waters, urging ships to maintain safe distances from the incident site to prevent further risk.
