Iranian FM Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf Arrive in Oman
Oman and Iran discuss de-escalation, maritime security, and stronger bilateral cooperation.
A significant diplomatic engagement took place in the Sultanate of Oman on Monday evening, as Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and Islamic Consultative Assembly Speaker Dr. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf met with Omani officials to discuss regional stability and bilateral cooperation.
The visiting delegation was received by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman's Foreign Minister. The meeting focused on strengthening good neighbourly relations between Muscat and Tehran, exploring avenues to deepen cooperation in support of mutual interests. A central theme of the discussions was the exchange of views regarding the latest political and security developments across the Middle East region.
De-escalation and Maritime Security
Both sides emphasized the critical importance of leveraging current diplomatic momentum to foster peace, promote de-escalation, and enhance regional stability. The talks aligned closely with principles of international law and the concept of "good neighbourliness," aiming to preserve security not only within national borders but also for maritime navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and other international waterways.
The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials from both nations, including Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Hinai, Ambassador at Large of the Omani Foreign Ministry, and Mousa Farhang, Iran's Ambassador to Oman.
Focus on Recent Diplomatic Developments
Following the closed-door session, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi provided insights into the discussions via the X social media platform. He described the dialogue concerning a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States as "constructive."
Specifically, the minister highlighted the significance of the MoU's provisions regarding the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Omani Foreign Minister, the discussions reaffirmed a shared commitment to international law, ensuring toll-free and safe passage through the strait—a key artery for global energy supplies and a focal point for regional security tensions.
"This underlined the importance of... promoting de-escalation and stability," Sayyid Badr noted, underscoring Oman's role as a mediator and facilitator in complex regional dynamics involving major powers.
The visit marks another step in the ongoing efforts by Gulf nations to maintain open lines of communication with Tehran, even as broader geopolitical tides shift. With both Oman and Iran sharing a coastline on the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, maintaining stable and cooperative relations remains a priority for economic and security reasons.
