In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Albusaidi confirmed:
“The 5th round of Iran US talks will take place in Rome this Friday 23rd May.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also confirmed the meeting, saying Tehran had accepted “a proposal put forward by (mediator) Oman... to organize another round of Iran-US talks” in the Italian capital.
These indirect talks are part of ongoing efforts to revive a nuclear deal after years of rising tensions. The discussions come after former President Donald Trump signaled his interest in striking a new deal to prevent a potential military escalation over Iran’s nuclear program.
Despite setting a two-month deadline for progress, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted that reaching an agreement won’t be easy. Speaking to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this week, Rubio said the US is offering Iran “an off-ramp” toward peace and economic growth.
“It will not be easy, but that’s the process we’re engaged in now,” Rubio said.
Oman has been quietly mediating between the two sides, helping facilitate indirect dialogue in hopes of breaking the deadlock and avoiding further escalation.
Whether this fifth round in Rome moves the needle remains to be seen, but all eyes will be on the outcome this Friday.
