Oman Bans Power Cuts During Exams, Nights, and Holidays

Oman’s Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) has confirmed strict limits on electricity and water cut-offs during sensitive times. No service disconnections are allowed between 5 PM and 7 AM, on the last working day before weekends, or ahead of official holidays.

This ensures that families and residents won’t face utility outages during evenings, weekends, or holiday starts.

Special Protection for Exam Seasons and Ramadan

APSR also prohibits any power or water cuts during the General Education Diploma (GED) exams and throughout Ramadan. These measures are coordinated closely with education authorities to support students and families during crucial periods.

Summer Electricity Bills Slashed to Help Residents

To reduce the financial burden when energy use spikes, Oman has cut residential electricity rates for May through August 2025, the hottest months with peak demand.

Residents eligible under income and residency rules are encouraged to register with the National Subsidy System to receive extra support on their utility bills.

Strong Growth in Oman's Energy Sector

Oman’s electricity production increased by 7.5% in 2024, hitting 45,388 gigawatt-hours by November. This growth was mainly driven by expansions in North and South Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, and Dhofar.

The electricity and water sectors contributed 2.5% to Oman’s GDP in 2024. From 2020 to 2024, investments in regulated sectors reached 2.837 billion Omani riyals, including 450 million riyals dedicated to electricity generation.

Future Outlook: Rising Demand and Renewable Energy

The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects Oman’s electricity consumption to grow about 3% annually for the next three years. APSR is continuing to push renewable energy projects and upgrade infrastructure to meet future needs.
