World Nutella Day: 5 Fun Facts About Nutella

Sunday, February 5th, is World Nutella Day and to celebrate the creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread, we've gathered some fun facts about it for Nutella lovers and fans from all over the world.

1. It originally came in the form of a loaf

Ferrero, the maker of Nutella, originally shaped this paste into a solid block designed to be sliced and placed on toast and named it 'Giandujot' after a local carnival character at that time.

2. Each jar contains 52 hazelnuts

As the name suggests, Nutella is indeed full of hazelnuts. Ferrero uses 25 percent of the entire world's hazelnut crop, which means there are 52 hazelnuts in every 14-ounce jar of Nutella.

3. You can't name your child after Nutella

A French court banned a couple from naming their daughter "Nutella" in 2015. The judge cited that the name would "lead to teasing or disparaging thoughts" as the reason behind the ban, saving the girl from a lifetime of mockery and humiliation.

4. It "spreads" far and wide

With one jar of Nutella sold every 2.5 seconds throughout the world, all of the Nutella sold in a year could be spread over more than 1,000 football fields.

5. There is no special knife hidden in the lid

Nutella, sadly, doesn't offer a secret spreading mini knife underneath the jar lid, despite a viral TikTok "hack" video in 2020 showing a secret compartment in the top of Nutella jars.
