Oman is making waves in press freedom, leaping 18 spots in the World Press Freedom Index 2024 by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Now at 137th place, with 42.52 points, compared to last year's 155th ranking with 37.87 points. The index evaluates press freedom using five indicators: political, legislative, economic, social, and security.
In the GCC, Bahrain ranks 173rd, Saudi Arabia 166th, UAE 160th, Kuwait 131st, and Qatar 84th. Norway leads the pack, with Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland following. Unfortunately, Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, Syria, and Eritrea bring up the rear.
Despite challenges, RSF notes a lack of political will globally to enforce journalist protection, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2222. The war in Gaza saw a surge in violations against journalists. In Palestine, security concerns persist, highlighting broader issues in the Middle East and North Africa.
