Funeral Ceremonies for Khamenei to be Hosted in Najaf and Karbala

Iraq will host major portions of memorial services for Ali Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader of Iran, in two of its most sacred Shiite pilgrimage sites, according to official announcements made Thursday.

Dual Ceremony Locations Set

The Iraqi government confirmed that funeral proceedings will take place in Najaf and Karbala, following arrangements coordinated between Baghdad and Tehran. Government spokesperson Major General Saad Maan disclosed that Khamenei's remains are scheduled to reach Najaf Airport on July 7, where formal state ceremonies will begin.

An additional public mourning service is planned for Wednesday in Najaf, preceded by official ceremonies. Subsequent commemorations will follow in Karbala.

Military intelligence contacts within Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces indicated that accompanying remains of Khamenei's relatives would arrive alongside his body, though they will proceed through separate funeral processions.

Multi-City Regional Procession

Iraq serves as one segment of a broader international funeral itinerary organized by Iran's Commemoration Committee. Earlier phases include observances in Tehran spanning July 4-5 and a procession on July 6, followed by events in Qom on July 7. The journey concludes with burial rites on July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, located in northeastern Iran.

Organizers characterized the transnational route as among the largest state funeral operations conducted throughout the Islamic Republic's history. Iraqi authorities report ongoing logistical coordination with the Iranian embassy, anticipating attendance numbering in the millions from both Iraq and neighboring nations.

Initially approved procedures called for stops in three Iraqi locations: Baghdad's Kadhimiyah district, then continuing to Najaf and Karbala. All sites house shrines devoted to venerated Shiite religious figures. However, compression of the timeline led officials to eliminate the Baghdad leg of the procession, according to Maj Gen Maan's announcement.

Religious Significance of Locations

Najaf contains the shrine of Imam Ali, recognized as the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Mohammed. His sons, Imam Hussain and Abbas, rest in nearby Karbala. These locations represent central pilgrimage destinations for Shia Muslims globally.

Khamenei, aged 86 at the time of death, passed away on February 28 amid initial days of military strikes launched against Iran by US and Israeli forces. Planning for funeral ceremonies experienced delays throughout the subsequent conflict period before resuming earlier this month.
