Oman and Trump Confirm US-Houthi Ceasefire in Yemen

In a surprise turn of events, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will stop its daily bombing campaign on Yemen following a ceasefire agreement with the Houthis. The deal, confirmed by Oman, marks a major shift in the ongoing conflict in the region.

Speaking at the White House during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump said,

“The Houthis have announced to us that they don’t want to fight any more. They just don’t want to fight, and we will honour that, and we will stop the bombings.”

A Ceasefire Brokered by Oman

Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that the Sultanate successfully facilitated talks between Washington and the Houthis. He said both parties agreed not to target one another, including American vessels, in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

This ceasefire is expected to allow safer passage for international shipping in the area, which had been disrupted by months of Houthi attacks. The armed group, aligned with Iran, began targeting ships in October 2023 in what it called support for Palestinians during the war in Gaza.

Trump: “I’ll Take Their Word”

Trump claimed the Houthis had "capitulated" and promised to stop attacks on maritime routes.

“I will accept their word, and we will be stopping the bombing of Houthis, effective immediately,” he said.

The US has carried out daily air strikes in Yemen for nearly two months, with many of them causing civilian casualties and significant infrastructure damage.

Houthis React Cautiously

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a senior Houthi figure, responded to Trump’s announcement with caution, saying the move would be "evaluated on the ground first." He reiterated that their actions in Yemen were in solidarity with Gaza and did not explicitly say if attacks on Israel would stop.

This comes as Israel launched heavy air strikes on Yemen’s Hodeidah port and Sanaa’s airport in retaliation for a Houthi missile strike near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.

US Clarifies Scope of Ceasefire

The US State Department made it clear that this ceasefire deal only concerns attacks involving US assets near Yemen’s coast. It does not extend to any conflict between the Houthis and Israel.
