Get your bank details ready—Oman now requires IBAN for every domestic money transfer.

It’s official: as of July 1, 2025, Oman has made it mandatory to use IBAN for all local bank transfers. Whether you're sending money within Oman or abroad, you'll now need your beneficiary's IBAN to get the job done.
The Central Bank of Oman says this change will help cut down payment errors, improve transfer speed, and make banking smoother for everyone.
Already Seeing Changes in Banking Apps
If you're using banks like Emirates NBD in the UAE, you’ve probably noticed alerts asking you to delete and re-add any Omani beneficiaries using their IBAN. These changes help avoid failed transfers.
Heads-up: once you add a new beneficiary, a 4-hour cooling period applies before you can send money—so plan ahead.
Wait, What’s an IBAN Again?
It's basically a universal format for identifying bank accounts across countries. It includes:
-
Country code (like “OM” for Oman or “AE” for UAE)
-
Check digits for security
-
Your regular bank account info
It doesn’t replace your existing account number—it’s just a cleaner, smarter wrapper that helps reduce payment delays and fails.
