Oman Matches Record with 10th Straight T20 WC Defeat

Oman matched an unwanted tournament record after suffering their 10th consecutive defeat at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, losing by nine wickets to Australia in their final group-stage match.

The defeat came at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Friday and saw Oman equal Bangladesh national cricket team’s streak of 10 successive losses at T20 World Cups between 2007 and 2012. Oman finished bottom of Group B without a win in the current edition.

Oman’s T20 World Cup struggles continue

Oman first qualified for the global T20 tournament in 2016, securing one victory in three group-stage matches. In the 2021 edition, co-hosted by Oman and the UAE, the side — then led by Zeeshan Maqsood — again managed a single win in three games.

They failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Australia. Under current captain Aqib Ilyas, Oman endured a winless campaign in the 2024 edition in the USA and the West Indies, a trend that continued this year with four straight defeats.

Australia vs Oman: Match summary

After winning the toss, Australia national cricket team chose to bowl first and quickly put Oman under pressure.

Oman bowled out for 104

Wasim Ali top-scored with 32 off 33 balls, including four boundaries, and was the only Oman batter to pass 20. Australia’s bowlers dismantled the rest of the batting line-up, dismissing Oman for 104 in 16.2 overs. Glenn Maxwell claimed 2/13 in three overs, while Xavier Bartlett took 2/27 from his four overs. Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Ellis chipped in with a wicket each.

Marsh and Head seal rapid chase

Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh smashed an unbeaten 64 off 33 balls, hitting seven fours and four sixes, while Travis Head added 32 from 19 deliveries. The pair powered Australia to the target in just 9.4 overs, securing victory with nine wickets in hand.

The win, achieved with 62 balls remaining, equalled the joint-biggest successful chase in terms of balls to spare for a 100-plus target in T20 World Cup history, matching England national cricket team’s record chase of 116 against the USA in the previous edition.
