Oman Sets Annual Bonus Rules for Private Sector Workers

Omani workers in the private sector will now get an annual bonus based on how well they perform at work. The Ministry of Labour just dropped a new decision that sets the rules—so no more guesswork on who gets what.

Who Gets a Bonus?

The bonus will be handed out every January 1, but only if the employee has been with the company for at least six months. The increase is tied to performance ratings, and here’s the breakdown:

  • Excellent: 5% of basic salary

  • Very Good: 4%

  • Good: 3%

  • Acceptable: 2%

  • Poor: No bonus

If someone feels their rating was unfair, they can appeal to the Ministry’s admin team.

Who Pays, and When?

If an employee transfers between companies, the one where they spent the most time in a year handles the performance report. But whichever company they’re in when the year ends will pay the bonus.

When Can Bonuses Be Held Back?

Employers can reduce or pause the bonus in two situations:

  • If the company is struggling financially and gets the green light from the Labour Law committee.

  • If the employee is facing a serious legal case, takes long unpaid leave, or is away for over six months in the bonus year.

But don’t worry—once things go back to normal, the bonus resumes too.

Employers, Take Note

Skipping these rules? That’ll cost you. A 50 OMR fine per affected employee will be slapped on any employer who doesn’t follow the guidelines.
