Oman Launches First Polymer One-Rial Commemorative Banknote
Oman unveils its first polymer one-rial note combining durability, security, and national heritage.
The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has announced the launch of the Sultanate’s first-ever polymer one-rial commemorative banknote, marking a major milestone in the evolution of the country’s national currency.
The new RO1 polymer banknote will officially enter circulation on January 11, 2026, and will be valid for use in all financial transactions at its face value.
According to the CBO, the commemorative note is made from polymer rather than traditional cotton-based paper, offering enhanced durability and advanced security features. Polymer banknotes are known for their longer lifespan, resistance to wear, and improved protection against counterfeiting.
Design celebrating Oman’s national achievements
The new polymer banknote measures 145 x 76 mm and features a distinctive design highlighting key national landmarks and development projects. The front of the banknote showcases the Oman Botanic Garden, while the reverse features the Sayyid Tariq bin Taimur Cultural Complex alongside the Port and Refinery of Duqm, reflecting Oman’s cultural heritage and economic progress.
The overall design brings together elements of nature, culture, and industrial development, presenting a visual narrative of Omani national identity.
Advanced security features
The commemorative RO1 banknote incorporates several high-level security elements. These include a prominent transparent window that mimics the arched windows of the Oman Botanic Garden, as well as a color-changing stamp in the shape of a frankincense tree on the front. The visual identity of the Central Bank of Oman also appears on the back of the note, printed in color-changing ink to enhance authenticity and security.
Circulation and collector availability
The Central Bank of Oman confirmed that the polymer commemorative banknote will circulate alongside existing one-rial notes currently in use. In addition to general circulation, limited quantities will be made available for collectors.
A total of 1,000 commemorative sheets and 10,000 individual banknotes presented in special envelopes will be offered for sale starting January 11, 2026. These will be available through the CBO’s exchange counters in Ruwi, Salalah, and Suhar, as well as at the Oman Post sales window at the Opera Galleria.
The launch positions Oman among a growing number of countries adopting polymer banknotes, reflecting global trends toward more secure, durable, and visually distinctive national currencies.
