Marine Changes Behind Red Shrimp Wash-Up in Mirbat Beaches

Mirbat beaches in Dhofar have become the site of a peculiar environmental phenomenon, as massive piles of dead red shrimp were discovered washed ashore, prompting investigations by fisheries experts.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has stated that initial findings point toward natural environmental factors as the likely cause, ruling out pollution. Specialists believe shifts in marine conditions may be responsible for the incident.

In an official statement, the ministry explained that small crustaceans, including juvenile shrimp and krill, are particularly vulnerable to changes in marine conditions. Factors such as sudden sea temperature variations, reduced oxygen levels, and strong currents can impact their survival and cause them to drift into inhospitable areas.

A technical team from the Fisheries Research Centre in Dhofar has conducted field visits to affected coastal sites in Mirbat. Preliminary observations and sample analyses have revealed no evidence of environmental contamination. Importantly, investigators reported no deaths among other marine species, narrowing the phenomenon to the crustaceans themselves.

"These crustaceans are highly sensitive to fluctuations in marine conditions," the statement noted, emphasizing that even small changes in temperature and oxygen levels can result in their mortality, leading to noticeable wash-ups on beaches.

This incident mirrors a similar occurrence last year in Rakhyut, Dhofar, where dead shrimp were observed along the coastline. Laboratory studies at the time identified the species as Challengerosergia umitakae, with the die-off attributed to natural sea temperature changes.

Such events, the ministry explained, are not uncommon and may recur periodically, especially during seasonal phases that are marked by significant marine fluctuations.

The ministry advised the public against consuming shrimp found washed ashore and urged caution. Officials assured that monitoring efforts and scientific examinations will continue to uncover additional information about the latest incident, while underscoring that no broad ecological impact has been detected thus far.
