Sharada Iyer, Sister of Indian Singer Chitra Iyer, Dies While Trekking in Oman

Sharada Iyer, the sister of Indian singer Chitra Iyer, died in a trekking accident in Oman’s Jebel Shams region on January 2, local authorities confirmed. She was 56.

Sharada Iyer, an Indian expatriate based in Muscat, was a native of Thazhava in Kerala and had previously worked as a manager with Oman Air. According to officials, she was part of a trekking group navigating designated trails in the Wadi Ghul area of Jebel Shams, located in Oman’s Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Gulf News reported.

While the exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed, authorities noted that the Jebel Shams region is known for its steep cliffs and challenging terrain, which can pose serious risks to trekkers, even along marked routes.

Singer Chitra Iyer announced her sister’s death through an emotional tribute on social media. In an Instagram post shared on Sunday, she wrote:
“Run along, you feisty little banshee of a sister! You run too fast! But I’ll catch up… eventually… soon, I promise. Love you, you insufferable monster."

In a separate Instagram post on Monday, Chitra Iyer said her sister’s body is being flown from Oman to Kerala, where the last rites will be held on January 7 at the family’s ancestral home in Thazhava.

Sharada Iyer had reportedly returned to Oman on December 24 after traveling to India earlier in the month to attend her father’s funeral. Her father passed away on December 11.
