Five Takeaways From Mojtaba Khamenei’s First Message as Iran’s Supreme Leader
New Iranian leader vows revenge, raises threat to global oil routes, and calls for closure of US bases in the region.
Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first message on Thursday since becoming Iran’s supreme leader, outlining a hardline stance against the country’s enemies and vowing revenge following the killing of his father.
The statement, read on Iranian state television, comes amid escalating tensions in the region after a conflict that began with a military campaign involving the United States and Israel at the end of February.
Here are five key takeaways from his first statement as leader.
1. Uncertainty Over His Condition
The message was introduced by a state television anchor as “the first message of the supreme leader of the Islamic revolution.”
However, the remarks were not delivered in person by Khamenei. Instead, they were read by a broadcaster, with the segment showing an archived photo of Khamenei alongside a computer-generated flag of the Islamic Republic.
The absence of new video, audio, or photographs has fuelled speculation about his current condition.
2. A Clear Call for Revenge
In the statement, Khamenei emphasised that revenge for the killing of his father remains a priority.
He said that some retaliation had already taken place, but warned that the process was not complete.
According to the statement, Iran would seek compensation from its enemies, and if they refused, Tehran would seize or destroy equivalent assets.
3. Threats Targeting Regional Energy Routes
Khamenei also warned that Iran could disrupt global oil supplies, highlighting the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz.
The narrow waterway carries around one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments, making it one of the most important energy routes globally.
He described blocking the strait as a possible “lever” Iran could use against its adversaries.
4. Call for Closure of US Bases
Khamenei urged neighbouring countries to shut down American military bases within their borders.
He argued that the presence of the United States Armed Forces in the region does not bring stability.
Iran shares land or maritime borders with around 15 countries, he noted, adding that Tehran had historically sought constructive relations with its neighbours.
However, he said those nations must decide where they stand regarding countries involved in attacks on Iran.
5. Personal Loss and Mourning
The statement also struck a personal tone, with Khamenei mourning the deaths of close family members.
He described his father, Ali Khamenei, as a “shining treasure and distinguished figure in history.”
Khamenei said he had personally seen his father’s body following what he called his “martyrdom.”
He added that the attack also claimed the lives of his wife, his sister, her child, and his brother-in-law, highlighting the personal impact of the conflict.
