Expat Allegedly Insulted Omani Rial on Social Media, Faces Legal Action

A woman in Oman is now under legal scrutiny after a video she posted on social media allegedly insulted the Omani rial, authorities say. The clip, which went viral, reportedly showed the misuse of the country’s currency.

What the Video Showed

In a screenshot shared by the Royal Oman Police (ROP), the video’s caption read:
“POV: How my family thinks I make money.”
Authorities say this content disrespected the national currency, prompting the investigation.

Legal Action Underway

The General Directorate of Investigations and Criminal Research confirmed that legal proceedings are ongoing. The case falls under laws that protect the Omani rial from public disparagement.

ROP’s Stance on Social Media

The incident underscores the police’s vigilance over social media activity, especially when posts are considered offensive to national symbols. Authorities have stressed that actions against such content will be strictly enforced.
