First Omani Mobile App for Sign Language Gets ALECSO Award

The first Omani smartphone application to assist people with hearing impairments, SignBook, won the Mada - ALECSO award for the year's finest mobile application benefiting people with determination.

The app, created by an Omani innovator Sultan Naseer Al Amri, and overseen by the Small and Medium Enterprises Authority, unlocks a world of opportunities and accessibility.

The Mada Innovation Program was established by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) to encourage innovators to develop Arabic solutions for the elderly and people with disabilities, boosting their accessibility within the area through a variety of grant initiatives.

With the help of SignBook, people with hearing impairments can access and take advantage of services offered by various public and private sectors.

The application is a game changer for those who have hearing loss and is much more than just a convenience. As technology promotes seamless integration between the deaf and hard of hearing groups and the hearing community.

The founder of SignBook application, Al Amri is the first deaf Arabic broadcaster and founded the Institute of Communication Training. A specialist for sign language education, he is the CEO of Hyatt Information Technology S.A.L.

The SignBook offers a number of functions, including a sign language translation service for official news, notices, and crises as well as an instant sign language interpretation service. Pre-written text can also be translated into sign language using a QR code or barcode.

The program makes it possible for people with hearing impairments to live freely and use secure, quick technology to overcome challenges they encounter.
