Oman to Launch a Digital Meter App for Public Taxis on June 1st

Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) will launch a mobile app of digital meters for public taxis on Thursday, June 1st, to determine the transportation tariff.

The "Aber" mobile app for orange and white taxis will determine the tariff for each trip to streamline taxi services in the Sultanate without the need of haggling over taxi fares.

Taxi drivers can download the app on both Android and iOS devices.

The new app comes in line with the ministry's plans to use modern digital technologies to regulate the activities of taxis in Oman.

Through the digital meter app, the ministry will safeguard the rights of both passengers and taxi drivers.

The app calculates the distance and time traveled per trip and estimates the total cost. It is an alternative to traditional meters used for calculating tariffs.

Fares have been fixed at a minimum of 300 baizas at the start of the service, with the addition of 130 baizas for each 1 kilometer. 50 baizas will be charged for each waiting minute after the lapse of five free minutes.

In case of multiple passengers, the total fare will be divided equally among them.
