Oman Warns of Heavy Rain and Flash Floods Across Several Governorates

The Oman Meteorology Department has issued a weather alert warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flash floods across multiple governorates today, as a trough of low pressure brings unstable weather to large parts of the Sultanate.

The advisory, valid from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., forecasts rainfall between 60–200 millimeters over North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah, and Al Buraimi, raising the risk of wadis (valley floods) and sudden water flows. The department also warned of strong downward winds, which may cause flying debris and hazardous driving conditions.

Authorities urged residents to remain indoors during peak storm hours, avoid flooded roads, and take precautions to protect vehicles and property.

Moderate to light rainfall between 10–30 millimeters is expected in North Al Sharqiyah and the southern parts of Musandam, while South Al Sharqiyah may experience light showers of 5–10 millimeters. Officials warned that even minimal rainfall could lead to flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas during periods of strong convection.

The Civil Aviation Authority’s National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre has urged the public to avoid crossing wadis, stay clear of flood-prone zones, and secure loose outdoor objects. The authority emphasized that updates should be followed only through official government channels.

Meteorologists also cautioned that downward winds reaching 15–35 knots (28–64 km/h) may reduce visibility during thunderstorms. The Meteorology Department continues to monitor the system closely and will issue further updates as the situation develops.
