Oman's Blue Carbon Project to Cut 14M Tons of Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Oman's Blue Carbon initiative will involve planting 100 million mangrove trees across the Sultanate to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 14 million tons. 

The initiative will help enhance the natural environment in the country as well it will also provide economic benefits of around $150 million.

The 100 million mangrove trees will be planted in targeted areas of Al Wusta Governate, which are Shanna, Al Najda, Dharf Hitam, and Film.

The Environment Authority (EA) has been working to maintain the sustainability of mangrove trees and their natural marine habitats. 

The authority has planted close to 797,760 seedlings of these trees in 32 locations in Oman. 

Oman is home to one species of mangrove tree Avicennia Marina and this species of tree can be found along the coastline from the North Al Batinah region to the Southern Dhofar region. 

Mangrove trees are found in other locations across Oman as well. 

Mangrove reserves are home to crustaceans, fish, molluscs, and birds and they also contribute to oxygen production and natural climate regulation.

The Blue Carbon initiative will help Oman achieve its environmental and sustainability goals.
