Two Crew Members Killed in Ship Attacks Off Oman as Regional Tensions Escalate

Two crew members have died in attacks on ships in the Gulf of Oman, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre confirmed.

An Indian national working in the engine room of the crude oil tanker MKD VYOM was killed. Authorities have brought the fire on board under control and plan to tow the vessel to safety.

A second fatality occurred on the US-flagged tanker Stena Imperative, berthed at the Port of Bahrain, following a drone strike in the early hours of Monday.

Other Ships and Oil Infrastructure Targeted

UKMTO reported three other vessels came under attack in the last 24 hours. In addition, oil infrastructure in the region was hit, including Jabal Ali port in Dubai and Saudi Arabia’s Tanura refinery following drone attacks.

Strait of Hormuz Disruption

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, has dropped by 80% in the past day. Although no official closure has been announced, Iranian forces are reportedly restricting navigation and causing major GPS, GNSS, and AIS disruptions. Mariners are facing severe communication and navigation interference.

Rising Concerns

The attacks come amid escalating regional tensions, raising concerns for shipping safety and global energy markets. Authorities are urging caution for vessels in the area while monitoring the situation closely.
