Potential Cyclone Brewing Near Oman, Authorities on Watch

Oman’s weather authorities are closely watching a developing tropical system in the eastern Arabian Sea that may turn into a depression within 36 hours. For now, forecasters say there’s no expected direct or indirect impact on the Sultanate over the next five days.

The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre continues to track the system’s movement and development, even as it remains far from Oman’s coast.

Cyclone season in full swing

The Indian Meteorological Department reports the system is likely to move northward and strengthen over the weekend. This development comes during one of the most active periods for tropical weather in the region — typically from May to July and again from October to November.

A region familiar with strong storms

While no action is currently needed, Oman is no stranger to the effects of powerful cyclones. Over the past two decades, the country has faced several deadly storms:

  • Cyclone Gonu (2007): 49 lives lost

  • Cyclone Phet (2010): 24 lives lost

  • Cyclone Mekunu (2018): 7 lives lost

  • Cyclone Shaheen (2022): 15+ lives lost, major damage

Cyclone Shaheen was the most recent major storm, hitting Oman in October 2022 with winds reaching 150 km/h. It caused severe flooding, landslides, and widespread infrastructure damage before weakening inland.

Stay informed

While Oman isn’t expected to face any danger from the developing system just yet, residents are advised to stay tuned to official updates in case the situation changes.
