Oman to Witness Rare Total Lunar Eclipse on September 7

Sky watchers across Oman will have the chance to witness a rare total lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 7, 2025, according to the Oman News Agency.

Dr. Ishaq bin Yahya Al Shuhaili, Chairman of the Oman Astronomical Society, confirmed the celestial event’s timings, noting that the eclipse will span more than five hours in total.

The phenomenon will begin with a penumbral eclipse at 7:28 p.m. Muscat time, followed by the partial phase at 8:27 p.m. The moon will then fully enter Earth’s shadow at 9:31 p.m., marking the start of the total eclipse.

The total phase will peak at 10:11 p.m. and continue until 10:53 p.m., before the moon gradually emerges from Earth’s umbra. The partial eclipse will end at 11:56 p.m., and the penumbral phase will conclude at 12:55 a.m. after midnight.

In total, the eclipse will last 5 hours and 27 minutes, with the full eclipse phase lasting 1 hour and 22 minutes, offering astronomy enthusiasts in Oman a rare night sky spectacle.

The rare phenomenon occurs when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow that gives the moon its distinctive crimson glow. Stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts across the country are expected to gather at open spaces and observatories to capture the event.

Lunar eclipses of this kind are not frequent in the region, making this one of the most anticipated skywatching highlights of the year.
